Why this Project:

All that motivated us to create the COBRAS BRASILEIRAS Project.

What is the COBRAS BRASILEIRAS Project

Bothrops alternatusCOBRAS BRASILEIRAS Project, constitute a photographic and information database, that will be used for the immediate identification of snakes of Brazilian fauna. As well as providing information on the initial steps of accidents involving these animals. Also be used as an important reference source of local support. Cover the areas of public health: medical, veterinary, biological, ecological and educational. The project will have a great social benefit.

In Portuguese, Spanish and English, as well as a complete source for research, will be used as a channel of services and utilities for their users: doctors, health technicians, academics, biologists, and general population. it is composed of a website, books, eBooks, DVD, child book and photo exposition.

The Internet technology, as the official vehicle of the COBRAS BRASILEIRAS Portal, would allow the poorest and more distant communities from urban centers, have easier access to technical information and hundreds of photographic images from its database about these animals.

Through the Portal - - with photos taken for use in identification and executed following a scientific visualization methodology, it is possible the rapid identification of snakes, some more common spiders, centipedes, scorpions, caterpillars, bees and other venomous animals of the Brazilian fauna.

The identification of the animal is of vital importance for the decision of the serum to be applied as well to the survival of the patient. It depends very much on the initial measures adopted. The importance of COBRAS BRASILEIRAS Project as a source of information for identification would be invaluable.

Bothrops alternatusThe Project has a team of high level advisors, all professionals in their areas and as part of worldwide prestigious universities and institutions in this sector.

COBRAS BRASILEIRAS Project, through its efficient and modern editorial design, in a simple way to disseminate complex technical information through consulting with several industry professionals and extensive research, will be a source of reference for consultation of great benefit to the population. Will be dynamic with the gradual addition of new elements.
The COBRAS BRASILEIRAS Project will generate a very good marketing return and a very positive social image for its investors.

The COBRAS BRASILEIRAS Project was created for 3 user profiles

  1. The person that suffered an accident with a venomous animal and needs, as fast as possible, precise information. His life depends on this!
  2. The doctor, veterinary or health professional, fireman, police etc. Professionals that have to attend cases involving accidents with venomous animals. They need fast and accurate information about procedures. They have no time to spare!
  3. The student, camper, ecologist. Any person that goes to the wide and needs info about the local venomous animals, support locations. Resumed information with good photos to identify the animals.

Who will benefit with this Project

This project is very well received by the medical and education areas in the country. We received many letters from Brazilian Institutions and Universities, mentioning the utility of the COBRAS BRASILEIRAS Project as support to students and on professional formation.

Estimated duration

Estimated duration of complete project, considering the stages of pre-production and post production, until the end of the portal will be 5 (five) months

COBRAS BRASILEIRAS Project will produce vitally needed communication tools to be used by public health programs, including: a Portal on the Internet, a book (Field Manual), DVD, booklet for children , and a photo exhibition to raise public awareness.

Through the portal - - with photos taken for use in identification and executed following a scientific visualization methodology, it is possible the rapid identification of vipers, snakes, venomous spiders and other venomous animals of the Brazilian fauna, to assist in the initial procedures of treatment caused by accidents and as a reference for local support.

The Project, will allow the poorest and more distant communities also have access to technical information and photographs of its database.
The animals are important, the serum is costly and the medical handling's also.

The economy of financial and human resources, generated by an informed and aware population, can turn out to be very important.

However, for the population, these information needs to be of quick access and easy comprehension. Thousands of books in libraries is not of much use to who can die in just a few hours!

The absence of pictures with identification quality; the official statistics with the huge quantity of accidents with venomous animals; the absence of quick access and to easy comprehension of complex technical information; the ecological consequences of the big quantity of animals being uselessly killed; the difficulty that is the identification of these animal, that kill or incapacitate so much persons for so long, was what motivated us to start the COBRAS BRASILEIRAS Project.
This Project, by its importance on public health and on the echo system, transcend the simple animal identification.

The main Project objectives are:

  1. PUBLIC HEALTH - Provide subsidies and procedures for handling accidents with venomous animals.
  2. ECOLOGY - Preservation of these animals.
  3. EDUCATION - Training in Schools and Universities. It will be a reference source for consultation.

The Problem with venomous animals

The cited data below by itself justify the creation of the COBRAS BRASILEIRAS Project:

The disorderly growth of urban centers provides more favorable conditions for the establishment and proliferation of these animals among these centers, endangering both people and animals.

Problems on the human health area

Nowadays envenom still constitute a serious public health problem in Brazil, both by the number of recorded cases, as much by their gravity.
As the human population expands and the habitat for animals is reduced, accidents involving venomous animals continue to grow. WHO (World Health Organization) estimates about over 4.5 million venomous accidents every year. In Brazil alone, this equates to almost 100,000 bites annually.
Accidents with venomous animals is the 3rd cause of health injury complains in Brazil. MÉDIA ANUAL DE AGRAVOS - SINAN — Information System for Notification Diseases — Brazilian Health Ministry.

Importance of animal identification

Bothrops jararacaIdentify the animal that caused the accident procedure is important in that it:

Micrurus altirostrisThe importance of a good source of information for its identification is invaluable.

Despite the importance of clinical diagnosis, which guides the conduct in most accidents, the causing animal must, to the extent possible, be sent for identification by a trained technician. (Manual de Diagnóstico e Tratamento de Acidentes por Animais Peçonhentos
Ministério da Saúde — Programa Nacional de Controle de Acidentes por Animais Peçonhentos

Poisoning by a venomous snake, scorpion or spider is a medical emergency requiring immediate attention. Anti venom should be given only if its stated range of specificity includes the species responsible for the bite.

Identification Program

A database of technical information and photographs, prepared by following a scientific methodology, specially made for the identification about not venomous and venomous animals of the Brazilian fauna. It will be accessed via an Identification Program, created for the project.

The Identification Program will made possible to identify animals using information such as color, shape, pattern, region, and other behaviors. You can also for example, not only choose the location for a camp and know which venomous animals exist there, but also have references of local support as hospitals, Fire Department, Environmental Police, CIT, Civil Defense etc. existing in that region.

Initially will relate not venomous animals (snakes, snakes, spiders, centipedes, scorpions) of the Brazilian fauna, and later add animals from neighboring countries, as extensions of the Amazon rainforest of Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.

Ecological problems

The Project is about animals of fundamental importance in the ecological system. They control the population of rodents, rats and insects and contribute a lot in the prevention of illnesses and epidemics. The dissemination of information on this project in an accessible and dynamic form will assist in its preservation.
For the ecology and preservation of the fauna, is necessary take into account that the man is no more than one of the species that inhabit this planet and as such can be so much the predator like the prey.
Therefore the disclosure of these knowledge for the preservation of health and of the fauna is very important.

Preservation of these animals

The preservation of these animals (snakes, vipers, snakes, spiders, centipedes, scorpions, caterpillars) depends heavily on the dissemination of existing knowledge about them, both to avoid unnecessary deaths and to avoid the handling and release these animals into wrong environments.
Bothrops jararacaIs it dangerous? It should be eliminated? Can it be removed? As and by who? A confrontation can be avoided? Can we coexist with him?
By his ecological value, the animals that do not offer danger should not be eliminated, therefore are important in researches for our survival, as well for the elaboration of antidotes and new medicines.
It is frightening to imagine the enormous quantity of these animals that are being killed by fear and ignorance. With the present demographic expansion the consequences of this in few years will be, at least, catastrophic!
These animals are treated as they were disposable. The act - just in case, kill! - Is absurd and should stop.

One of the main goals of the Project is to find, through its Advisors, a viable solution for a coexistence with these animals.
The solution is in education. Who knows does not fear!.

Problems on education

There is not a database, with photos and information available online, with all Brazilian snakes. This makes it difficult to identify these animals.

Crotalus Durissus Terrificus top photoWhen finished the COBRAS BRASILEIRAS Project will have a rare image database with all Brazilian snakes, some of the venomous spiders and scorpions, all photographed under the same conditions.

Part of the photos of the Project will be under Creative Commons free copyright use. Will be available to technicians, doctors, population and students. Any one that needs photos of these animals to illustrate a doc, report etc. .

We have many support letters from Brazilian Institutions and Universities mentioning the utility of the Project as support to students and on professional formation. See too on the links HEHA ; SVISA/GIP/CIT ; IDTNP ; UFRJ

Although the Project is still only a prototype online, we often receive requests from people and companies asking to identify photos of snakes they found in home etc.

Training in Schools and Universities

The internet technology, as official vehicle COBRAS BRASILEIRAS Project, will allow the poorest and more distant communities from urban centers also have easy access to technical information and hundreds of images from its database.
It is very important the dissemination of knowledge for the preservation of public health and wildlife. However, for the people, this information must be easy to understand and of quick access.

Immediate objectives in education are:

Knowledge and prevention are the key factors to reduce accidents with venomous animals.

Project Objectives for the future

The theme Accidents with venomous animals is universal and will always be present as long as people and these animals coexist.

The project will start in Brazil and is being planned to add other countries. We are using programs and methods adopted worldwide by scientific and technical communication specialists. This will ensure an easier portability of this project to other idioms..

Bothrops jararacussuThe consulting team was selected for its ability to not only ensure a broad coverage in the most recent scientific concepts, but also for their interest and be able to continue the project. Our intention is not to create a static Project, online or printed, but a continuous and efficient movement of technicians, professionals and individuals interested in the subject over the years to come. Data and information will be kept updated.
We understand that our pretensions are great but the necessity of a global project of this social and public health spread is even greater. This will be the first steps of a long walk.

What currently exists for identification on the Internet

There are many disperse informations. Or are of difficult access - ex: inside of the page of the page of the page - or highly complex and specialized, or with a complicated and inefficient layout.
Photos of animals taken in nature, where the animal is camouflaged, is of little value for identification.

For the identification of the animal and the taken of immediate vital decisions, the images must be of high visual and informative quality.

What exist now is almost useless for immediate help. Nothing similar to Brazilian Snakes.

COBRAS BRASILEIRAS Project will concentrate in one location all visual, technical, medical and veterinary informations necessary for a quick, clear and objective identification of the animal.

Existing sites in Brazil to get help:

Media's used in the Project

Portal (site)

Internet Portal for consultation totally free for two years. Portal already registered as for the Portuguese - Spanish and English version. Responsive design.
Much information will be added and improved. The portal will be updated several times a year.

Information is presented in two stages:

Each venomous animals have a summary of medical and veterinary treatment and recommendations.

Has sections on

Multimedia version, using the most modern audiovisual resources, with the information contained in the Portal, using Adobe Acrobat® and Adobe AIR® formats. No Internet need.

Photographic Exhibition

Traveling photo exposition with the 40 best photos of the animals. This material had been the provision (s) of Sponsor (s), schools, museums and interested.

Photos will be printed in a special long lasting paper, frames and packaging..

Printed book

Paper book Brazilian Snakes - Field Manual, medium size (13x20cm), to bring in backpacks, purses, briefcases etc. Containing only venomous animals, (± 56) snakes, some spiders, scorpions, centipedes and caterpillars. Addresses of accredited hospitals in the country, police, fireman and emergency medical recommendations.

The Brazilian Snakes - Field Manual will be very useful as a quick reference guide, in backpacks, pockets, glove box etc for campers, hikers, farmers and all who come in contact with nature. High quality printing and binding resistant to continuous use.

Digital version of the Brazilian Snakes - Field Manual, to download in the Portal, for use in iPad, tablets, smart phones, eReaders in the formats: EPUB, Kindle, Nook.

Children book

According to statistics, a large proportion of accidents with venomous animals occur with children. We will create a children's book, illustrated with photos and drawings and easy text, as a comic book.
Distributing this book in schools, we believe, that with knowledge about snakes, many accidents involving children can be avoided.

eBook version of the Children book

Digital version of the Children book to download in the Portal for use in iPad, tablets, smart phones, eReaders in the formats: EPUB, Kindle, Nook, PDF. Layout for use in EPUB format.

The main objective of the COBRAS BRASILEIRAS Project is to contain the necessary information about each animal, described in a pedagogical and easily understandable to the layman. All text written by experienced technical writer using Information Mapping / Plain English techniques to reduce the amount of text, facilitate legibility and portability to other idioms.

Photographs and Videos

The absence of really good and informative pictures about animals that kill or incapacitate so much people at so long, is almost total.
To be identified correctly these animal need images with high photographic and information quality. Pictures in their habitats, where they are camouflaged, are almost useless for identification.
Snakes are very beautiful animals with highly graphical movements and amazing patterns. We intend to explore this. To make the most informative photos as possible and at same time show a beautiful animal. People must learn to see these animals as what they are, animals, not monsters.
The photos must inform, instruct, inspire, amaze and provoke respect for species that are much unknown and eliminated as garbage.

Method used in the photos

ALL LIVE ANIMALS! All photographs made specially for identification will have the same clean background and same angles. The absence of natural interferences will facilitate the identification and comparisons of the snakes.
Snakes are very difficult to identify. There are people with an instinctive repulsion and fear, a psychological tendency to avoid looking at these animals. All this makes identification more difficult.
Our first objective will be pictures for use in identification following a scientific methodology of visualization.

Security during the photographs

More than 200 venomous snakes will be photographed in the studio and on a special table. With about 10 pictures for every animal we will make at least 2000 pictures of snakes. Some spiders, scorpions, centipedes and caterpillars.

These animals are mostly extremely dangerous, unpredictable, quick and deadly. They can cause terrible injuries. It will be adopted stringent security measures.
Bothrops jararacussuThe animals will be handled by highly trained and experienced technicians.

Because of the dangers in this work, in order to avoid possible legal action and compensation to the sponsors, an insurance contract with a reputable insurer providing coverage for injury or fatality during the shoot will be done through a lawyer.
This will ensure that operators and representatives, will receive a compensation in case of injury or fatality. A guarantee for the Company (ies) - Sponsor (s).

Any materials that may help in identification will be used. Like the manner of locomotion of snakes. Videos of these animals in the wild and in captivity.

The Making-off of the project will be filmed. Institutions, field technicians and all information that may enrich the project.

Institutions — photograph and video

Photos will be made in the cities of Porto Alegre, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Cuiabá, Fortaleza, Manaus and for the non venomous snakes in national parks, farms and in the open field.

Museums and herpetology institutions of the country, biological reserves, national parks and zoos.

Distribution of information

The informations on the Project should be available, in a quick and easy way, to anyone.

The COBRAS BRASILEIRAS Project will deliver this through various mediums:

Disclosure and Communication

COBRAS BRASILEIRAS Project will be widespread in diverse ways:

Plan of reciprocity for the Sponsors

The COBRAS BRASILEIRAS Project is also an open project to the social interests of the Sponsors. A space in the book, DVD and in the Photographic Exposition can be created for the Sponsors.
